Fact Check: Government Declares Public Holiday in Karachi Tomorrow?

A fake notification claiming a public holiday in Karachi on Friday, April 26, 2024, has gone viral on social media.

The post falsely stated that government offices, schools, and businesses would close due to a strike against Israeli attacks on Gaza. However, the Commissioner Karachi’s office confirmed the notice is not official and urged citizens to ignore it.

The viral message declared a city-wide holiday to “ensure public safety” during the strike. It claimed all government and private institutions, including schools, would shut down. Authorities clarified this is false, and no official holiday has been announced.

Previous the news was circulated about the public holiday was fake.

The Commissioner of Karachi has declared Saturday, April 26, 2025, as a public holiday in the city.

This decision comes after several organizations announced a strike, and the holiday aims to protect citizens from any possible inconvenience or unrest.

Why is There a Strike in Karachi?

The strike on April 26 has been called to raise voices for different causes:

  • To protect Sindh’s water resources

  • To show solidarity with the Palestinian people

  • To support the rights of the Baloch people

Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) had announced a nationwide strike on April 22 to protest against Israeli attacks on Gaza. That strike also had an impact in Karachi. Now, JI and the trader community of Karachi have jointly announced a complete strike for Saturday, April 26.

What Will Be Closed?

According to an official notification by the Commissioner Karachi:

  • All government and private offices will be closed

  • Educational institutions will remain closed

  • Other workplaces will also be shut

The decision has been made to keep things safe and easy for the public.

Business Activities to Remain Suspended

All major traders’ organizations in Karachi have supported the strike. As a result, markets, shops, and business centers are expected to stay closed across the city.

Citizens Advised to Stay Cautious

Authorities have advised citizens to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel on April 26

  • Cooperate with law enforcement to maintain peace

However, essential services will remain available. These include:

  • Hospitals

  • Emergency services

  • Rescue departments
