Pakistan Observes International Labour Day Today to Honour Workers
International Labour Day is being observed across Pakistan today (Thursday) with a renewed national focus on promoting workers’ rights, social justice, and improved workplace safety. The theme for this year—”Social justice and decent work. Safety and health of workers”—highlights the urgent need for fair working conditions globally.
As with many countries, Pakistan has declared an official public holiday. Across the nation, trade unions, labour rights organisations, and NGOs are holding rallies and public gatherings to shine a light on workers’ demands and to celebrate their contributions.
President Zardari’s Message: Focus on Skill Development
President Asif Ali Zardari, in his message, emphasised the importance of equipping workers and youth with modern, market-relevant skills to meet the demands of a changing economy. He urged all sectors—governments, businesses, education providers, and civil society—to work together in creating a strong framework for labour skill development.
“This day reminds us of the historic struggle waged by workers around the world for their rights and dignity. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to their empowerment, fair wages, safe working conditions, and social protection,” the President was quoted as saying in a press release.
He also recognised workers as the foundation of the country’s economy:
“It is our workers who sustain our manufacturing industries, agriculture, small and medium enterprises, government and other public sectors. Our workers are our pride, and we owe our national development to their hard work and contributions.”
PM Shehbaz’s Message: Workplace Safety and Equality
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed similar sentiments, describing workers as the “real driving force behind our nation’s growth and resilience.” He pointed out that Pakistan now has its first National Occupational Safety and Health Profile, aimed at ensuring safer work environments nationwide.
He highlighted expanded coverage of institutions like EOBI and the Workers Welfare Fund, and the ongoing skill-building initiatives through NAVTTC and TEVTAs, with a focus on youth and women.
“On this important day, I urge all stakeholders, including employers, workers, civil society, and government to join hands in building a culture that respects labour, upholds their rights, and creates opportunities of decent work for all,” he said.
