Traffic chaos unfolded on the M1 motorway after a serious crash brought northbound lanes to a complete halt. The incident occurred between Junction 12 (Flitwick) and Junction 13 (Bedford), prompting an immediate emergency response.
National Highways East issued a statement urging motorists to remain patient: “Please be patient while emergency services assess the incident, we’ll try and get you moving again soon.” Drivers were seen exiting their vehicles under the heat as they waited for the motorway to reopen.
The crash has come at a time of heavy traffic, with an estimated 17 million Britons expected to travel over the bank holiday weekend. Friday alone saw around 3 million trips, with another 2.9 million drivers hitting the roads on Saturday.
RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson warned of worsening congestion, saying, “Although the Easter break was just two weeks ago, this weekend will still be extremely busy as many people take advantage of another bank holiday. If possible, drivers should avoid travelling on Friday evening, when leisure and commuter traffic overlap.”
Meanwhile, weather conditions that began with sunshine and warmth may take a turn. The Met Office forecasts a dry and bright Saturday in many areas, with highs of 20–21°C in the south. However, Sunday could bring cooler temperatures and scattered showers, particularly in the east and along the North Sea coast.
As the weekend unfolds, travellers are advised to plan ahead to avoid delays and unpredictable weather.
