NADRA Non-Chip CNIC: Here’s everything you need to know!

06 May, 2025 17:16

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has officially rolled out a new version of the Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) that comes without a chip but is loaded with digital features. This new no-chip CNIC offers increased accessibility, integrated services, and even lifetime validity for certain applicants.

Unlike the previous smart CNICs that contained chips, the updated card includes a scannable QR code and supports digital identity integration through the PakID mobile app. NADRA confirms that the QR code was present in chip-based cards too, but the new version enhances digital interaction while reducing production costs.

Individuals still holding older, non-chip CNICs can now upgrade directly to this digitally enabled version without needing to shift to the chip-based Smart National Identity Card (SNIC). This not only simplifies the process but also provides a cost-friendly solution for those needing renewal or data modifications.

To maintain consistency with travel documents, the new card displays information in both Urdu and English — the same standard followed by SNICs and passports.

One standout feature of this card is the lifetime validity option for registered organ donors, along with a unique symbol that signifies their status. People with disabilities are also eligible for lifetime validity under this scheme.

NADRA has kept the pricing affordable: Rs400 for standard (30-day) processing, Rs1,150 for urgent (2-week) service, and Rs2,150 for executive (9-day) delivery. Renewals can be done either in person at NADRA centers or online through the PAK-IDENTITY portal. If there are no changes to the card’s information, only a recent photo is needed for online renewal.

This new no-chip CNIC reflects NADRA’s aim to simplify identity management while offering affordable digital access to all citizens.
