Drones Sent by India, Shot Down by Pakistan Were Israeli-Made Harop MK 2

08 May, 2025 15:42

Pakistan’s military has confirmed the interception and destruction of 25 Indian drones across various locations, including Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Bahawalpur, Mianwali, Karachi, Chor, Miano, and Attock. The drones involved in these attacks were identified as Israeli-made Harop MK 2 models, designed for high-altitude surveillance.

The drones used in these operations are capable of reaching altitudes of up to 35,000 feet, making them difficult to intercept by most standard anti-aircraft systems. The engine, produced by the UK-based UAV Engines Ltd, was recovered intact with visible manufacturer markings. This marks the first successful interception of this specific drone model globally.

Provocative Military Actions Escalate Tensions

Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, highlighted the increasing threat posed by India’s provocative military actions. He warned that these activities not only jeopardize regional stability but also pose a broader global security risk. The drone strikes are part of a series of escalations that began with an Indian missile attack, which tragically killed 31 civilians and injured 57 across Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Air Force Response to Indian Airstrikes

Following Indian airstrikes on May 6–7, during which multiple Indian fighter jets were downed by Pakistan’s Air Force, sources suggest that the Indian Air Force is now hesitant to launch additional manned missions. Pakistani officials continue to describe their responses as “firm and proportionate” to India’s aggression.

India’s Attempt to Divert Attention

Security sources believe India is attempting to divert attention from its military setbacks by escalating tensions. This tactic is seen as an attempt to appease domestic audiences amid mounting pressure. In contrast, Pakistan’s armed forces remain on high alert and ready to respond to further provocations.

The Pahalgam Attack & Retaliatory Measures

The latest round of hostilities follows the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which resulted in 26 deaths. India blamed Pakistan-based elements for the attack, but no evidence was provided. Islamabad rejected the accusations, and in retaliation, India shut the Wagah land border on April 23, suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, and revoked Pakistani visas. Pakistan responded by declaring any disruption of water flow an “act of war” and closing the Wagah crossing on its side.

Swift Retaliation by Pakistan Following Indian Airstrikes

On Wednesday, reports emerged from across Pakistan—Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Muridke, and Bahawalpur—indicating explosions. Lieutenant General Chaudhry confirmed that Indian airstrikes targeted several locations. Pakistan’s response was immediate, involving both air and ground operations. Within the first hour, Pakistan announced the downing of five Indian fighter jets, including four Rafale jets purchased from France by India. Pakistan’s military noted that it could have downed more jets but chose to exercise restraint.

Indian Media Silence on Losses

Despite Pakistan’s successful retaliation, Indian media remained silent regarding the losses. An initial report by The Hindu mentioned the downing of three Indian jets, but the story was later removed, possibly due to government pressure to avoid further embarrassment. A senior French intelligence official confirmed to CNN that one Rafale jet had been shot down by Pakistan, marking the first time the advanced French aircraft was lost in combat.

Shifting Regional Balance of Power

The ongoing confrontation has also sparked analysis about the shifting balance of power in the region. Some experts suggest that Pakistan’s acquisition of J-10C jets from China in response to India’s Rafale fleet is proving to be highly effective. Analysts believe this could alter the regional military dynamics, especially as China’s J-10C jets show significant potential against India’s advanced Rafale jets.
