A senior Swedish diplomat who was recently arrested on suspicion of spying has been found dead. The man was arrested after a police raid on his home in Sweden last Sunday. Just four days later, he was confirmed dead.
Arrest on Espionage Charges
The unnamed man was a high-ranking diplomat. He had worked in several embassies around the world. Swedish media reported that the arrest was part of an espionage investigation. The alleged crimes took place between May 1 and May 11.
Police arrested him on Monday. However, he was later released. After leaving custody, the man reportedly went straight to a hospital. His lawyer, Anton Strand, said the diplomat denied doing anything illegal. He also filed a report accusing police of assault and misconduct during the arrest.
Death Shocks Government and Public
On Thursday, Swedish officials confirmed the man had died. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared a short statement:
“Unfortunately, we can confirm that an employee at the Foreign Service has passed away. Out of respect for the family, no further details will be given.”
Maria Malmer Stenergard, Sweden’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed sadness:
“My thoughts are with the employee’s family, friends, and colleagues.”
Linked to Sensitive Photo Leak?
Although full details have not been made public, Swedish broadcaster SVT reported the arrest may be connected to a recent scandal. Sensitive images were allegedly leaked on a dating site. These pictures led to the resignation of Tobias Thyberg, Sweden’s national security advisor. He stepped down just one day after taking the role earlier this month.
Investigation Ongoing
The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) has not commented on the man’s death. A spokesperson said they could not confirm or deny details due to a gag order on the case.
Lawyer Anton Strand said the man’s family wants the case to move forward.
“They want answers. They also want the police report of assault and misconduct to be fully investigated,” he said.
