Sugar prices rise again in Pakistan – May 2025 city-wise rate update

People in Pakistan are once again feeling the pinch as sugar prices have jumped sharply. In some parts of the country, especially in Peshawar, the price of sugar has gone as high as Rs185 per kg, the highest seen so far.

According to the latest data from the Federal Bureau of Statistics, the national average sugar price has increased by Rs3.38 in just one week, going from Rs171.81 to Rs175.19 per kg.

Peshawar saw the biggest weekly price jump, with sugar rising by Rs5 per kg in just one week. This sudden hike is putting more pressure on families already struggling with rising costs of daily essentials.

Sugar prices have been climbing throughout the year. In May 2024, the average price was Rs143.75 per kg, which means there’s been a rise of over Rs31 per kg in the past year.

The steady increase in sugar prices is worrying both consumers and economic experts. Many fear that if this trend continues, it could hit low- and middle-income families the hardest.

Experts are urging the government to look into why prices keep rising and to take quick action to bring stability to the market.
