São Paulo, Brazil — A Brazilian couple who spent more than seven decades together passed away on the same day, just ten hours apart, two days after their 74th wedding anniversary.
Odileta Pansani de Haro, 92, and her husband Paschoal de Haro, 94, died at their home in Votuporanga, in northwest São Paulo. Odileta passed away at 7:00 AM, and Paschoal followed her at 5:00 PM — both in the same room, surrounded by family.
A Love That Started in Their Teens
Their story began in the town square of Votuporanga when Odileta was 15 and Paschoal was 18. Their first meeting was light-hearted — a small chain slipped from Paschoal’s hand and hit Odileta’s arm, which made them both laugh. That moment sparked a connection that lasted a lifetime.
The couple married in April 1951. Odileta became a full-time homemaker, while Paschoal worked at a fabric shop. Together, they raised six children, and later enjoyed the love of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Life Devoted to Family and Community
Over the years, they built more than just a family. The couple also founded a local charity, providing baby clothes to single mothers and food for people in need. Their son-in-law Luciano Leal said they showed love and kindness to everyone, regardless of race or background.
“They were always welcoming and ready to help,” he said. “They believed in self-love and shared that love with the world.”
Facing Health Battles Together
In recent years, Odileta was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and Paschoal took care of her as her condition worsened. But in 2023, Paschoal received his own diagnosis — terminal bowel cancer.
Knowing his time was limited, he began to pray for a final wish: to die on the same day as his wife. “They always said they’d leave together — and they did,” Luciano shared.
A Peaceful End to a Legendary Love
Their family gathered for their 74th wedding anniversary just two days before their passing. It was a celebration of a lifelong bond. On April 17, Odileta passed peacefully in the early morning. Paschoal followed her that evening.
“They lived, they loved, and they triumphed,” said Luciano. “It’s a love story worthy of a film. Their legacy will live on in their family and in every life they touched.”
