Pakistanis lead asylum applications in UK amid rising challenges

Pakistani nationals have become the top group seeking asylum in the UK, reflecting the growing struggles in the region.

According to the UK Home Office, 11,048 Pakistanis applied for political asylum last year, out of a total of 109,343 applications. This is a significant jump from the previous year when Pakistan ranked third in asylum applications.

Experts link this rise to the tough conditions in Pakistan, including political unrest, economic instability, and limited job opportunities. These factors have pushed many Pakistanis to seek better lives abroad.

Afghans ranked second on the list, with 8,069 applications, highlighting the ongoing impact of conflict and economic collapse in South Asia. Migration experts stress that these trends require urgent international action to address governance and development issues in the region.

A worrying detail in the report is that 33% of asylum seekers reached the UK via small, dangerous boats. This reflects the extreme risks people are willing to take in their search for safety and stability.

The UK government has promised to review each asylum case fairly. However, the rising numbers from South Asia are challenging European migration policies, which are already under strain.

Human rights advocates argue that the root causes of migration—poverty, persecution, and instability—need to be addressed rather than focusing solely on border control. They call for long-term and humane solutions to the global migration crisis.
