Government Announces Six-Day Holidays for Eid al-Adha 2025
Muslims around the world are preparing to observe the night sky on Tuesday, May 27, to spot the crescent Moon — a key moment that will determine the start of Dhul Hijjah and the official date of Eid Al-Adha 2025.
Eid Al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of Islam’s most significant holidays. It coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage, which brings hundreds of thousands of worshippers to the holy city of Makkah for a series of sacred rituals.
On Sunday, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia issued a call for Muslims across the Kingdom to observe the sky on the evening of 29 Dhu al-Qadah 1446 AH (May 27) in search of the Dhul Hijjah crescent.
While the Saudi government has not yet announced official public holidays, the Saudi Exchange (Tadawul) has confirmed its Eid closure dates. Trading will stop at the end of business on 8 Dhul Hijjah (June 4) and resume on 15 Dhul Hijjah (June 11), resulting in a six-day break.
If the crescent is sighted on Tuesday evening, Dhul Hijjah 1 will begin on Wednesday, May 28, and Eid Al-Adha will be observed on Friday, June 6. If not, the Islamic month will start on Thursday, May 29, with Eid falling on Saturday, June 7.
The Moon sighting is being closely watched by Muslims worldwide, as it marks not only a spiritual milestone but also shapes travel, worship, and celebration plans during this holy season.
