Why Series of Earthquakes Hit Karachi in 24 Hours? Experts Reveal Real Reason

02 June, 2025 15:36

Karachi residents have reported a series of mild earthquakes since Sunday, particularly affecting areas such as Malir, Quaidabad, and Gadap Town. Chief Meteorologist Ameer Haider confirmed that these tremors are linked to ongoing seismic activity along Karachi’s active fault lines.

Speaking to Geo News, Haider stated that the city experienced four minor earthquakes from Sunday evening through early Monday morning. The latest tremor occurred just before dawn, while another was recorded at 5:33 PM on Sunday, registering a magnitude of 3.6 at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Why Karachi Experienced Earthquakes

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), one of the tremors originated near Quaidabad. Another, recorded at 1:06 AM, had a magnitude of 3.2 and a depth of 12 kilometers, with its epicenter located near Gadap Town.

Haider explained that these minor seismic events are caused by movements along the Landhi Fault Region—one of Karachi’s two main fault lines. The other major fault lies near Thana Bola Khan.

“These are low-magnitude tremors, and historically, the Landhi Fault Line has not produced any major earthquakes,” he noted.

Continued Seismic Activity Expected

The chief meteorologist added that light tremors are common during periods of tectonic adjustment and may persist for the next few days. He also pointed out that the nearby Kirthar mountain range, located close to a significant tectonic boundary, occasionally experiences moderate seismic activity.

“The fault line may take a few days to stabilize, so residents could continue to feel slight tremors,” Haider said.
