A 19-year-old mechanic, Thinad Agathangelou, tragically died after his motorbike plunged into the Grand Union Canal in Southall, West London. His body was found at around 11am on the Bank Holiday Monday.
Thinad had been out riding near the canal before the fatal accident happened. Police believe the incident occurred sometime between 3pm on Sunday, May 25 and the time he was discovered the next day.
A Loving Son Remembered
His mother, Anna Agathangelou, 53, spoke to Metro about her loss. She described Thinad as a loving and helpful son who was full of life.
βHe was a lovely, caring son who would do anything for anyone. He had dinner with me on Saturday. He was his usual selfβfun, helpful, full of love.β
Thinad lived in Hendon and worked as a mechanic in a garage that converted camper vans. His mother said he loved his job and had big dreams for his future.
She said she didnβt know why he was in Southall and hoped the police investigation would explain what happened.
βHe didnβt know anyone in Southall, as far as I know. Weβre still in the dark about how he ended up there.β
A Passion for Bikes
Thinad had always loved bikes, starting with bicycles before moving to motorbikes. His mother said riding was his passion.
βI spoke to the man who found him. He said Thinad was wearing his helmet, which helped his body float.β
She also shared how Thinad had visited her before the tragedy. He had offered to go to B&Q to pick up garden supplies for her.
βHe was a bright boy, had many friends. He was a thoughtful and loving son.β
Tributes Left at the Scene
At the canal towpath, flowers, cards, and photos have been left by family and friends. A framed photo showed Thinad on his 17th birthday, smiling with a cake.
One touching message from his girlfriend read: βYou have no idea how much I love and miss you. I will cherish the moments we had.β
Local residents have expressed shock over the tragedy. A housing estate caretaker said: βPeople are deeply shocked. The towpath is narrowβitβs not easy to ride fast there.β
Police Appeal for Information
The Metropolitan Police have launched a public appeal. Theyβre asking anyone with CCTV or Ring Doorbell footage from the area between 3pm on May 25 and 11am on May 26 to come forward.
βWe are investigating how the man and motorbike ended up in the canal behind Carter Court in Southall,β said a Met spokesperson.
