Is Karachi at risk of Major Earthquake after series of tremors? Check Details

04 June, 2025 19:48

In the past few days, Karachi has experienced a series of low to moderate tremors, sparking fear and confusion among its citizens. The strongest quake was recorded on Sunday, followed by three more tremors on Tuesday morning, adding to public anxiety.

Met Office: No Threat of Major Earthquake

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), these tremors are not signs of a major earthquake. Met Office experts have assured the public that there is no immediate danger, although minor seismic activity may continue for another 2–3 days.

The Director General of the Met Office explained that Karachi is located near minor fault lines, which makes it more vulnerable to such low-intensity seismic movements. However, he clarified that these fault lines are not very active, and the current situation does not suggest a large-scale event.

Collapse at Malir Jail Raises Concerns

One serious incident linked to the tremors was the collapse of a wall at Malir Jail, which led to a temporary jailbreak. PMD officials confirmed that the prison is located near the epicenter of some of the recent seismic activity, making it more susceptible to damage.

Misinformation on Social Media

As the earthquakes continued, false rumors and misleading posts circulated on social media, adding to public panic. Authorities have urged citizens to rely on official sources like the PMD or National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for updates.

Karachi’s Seismic Readiness Under Spotlight

Though no major damage has been reported beyond the Malir Jail incident, these tremors have raised important questions about Karachi’s preparedness for earthquakes. Experts are calling for better public awareness, structural safety checks, and emergency response planning in light of these frequent tremors.

At present, officials continue to monitor the situation, and the aftershocks are expected to end within the coming days.
