Sugar rate in Pakistan today: New average and top prices revealed
Sugar prices in Pakistan have gone up once again, even though the government is trying to control the market. According to the Federal Bureau of Statistics, the average price of sugar increased by Rs 3.77 per kg in just one week, reaching Rs 180.93 per kg. In some areas, sugar is being sold at Rs 195 per kg.
The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) shows a 2.13% increase in sugar prices over the past week. City-wise sugar rates are as follows:
Islamabad: Rs 188.70
Rawalpindi: Rs 186.31
Khuzdar: Rs 185
Karachi: Rs 182.84
Lahore: Rs 180
Hyderabad: Rs 177.32
This sharp rise in prices happened after the government allowed the export of 765,734 tonnes of sugar between July and May 2025, which brought in Rs 114 billion. However, this decision caused local sugar prices to jump by almost Rs 50 per kg.
To handle the shortage, the government now plans to import 250,000 tonnes of raw sugar (pending cabinet approval) and 500,000 tonnes of refined sugar (already approved in principle).
But imported sugar may not help much, as it will be expensive. The landed cost of raw sugar is Rs 153 per kg, which increases to Rs 181 per kg after taxes, and could reach Rs 249 per kg with all duties included. Due to these high costs, the imports may not be enough to bring down local prices.
The final impact on sugar rates will depend on future decisions about imports, enforcement, and the local sugar crop output in the coming months.
