Albie Amankona Sues GB News for Unfair Dismissal After Calling Suella Braverman ‘Racist’

24 June, 2025 15:32

On June 24, 2025, former GB News presenter Albie Amankona has started legal action against the channel. He claims unfair dismissal after he called ex-Home Secretary Suella Braverman a “racist” on air last year. Amankona, 31, a Conservative activist and broadcaster, says he faced racial harassment and victimisation while working at GB News.

Amankona co-hosted The Saturday Five debate show until July 2024. During a July broadcast, he described Suella Braverman as “a racist and a thoroughly bigoted woman.” GB News quickly apologized to Braverman, saying his comments had “crossed a line” and caused offense. They also said the MP was “understandably upset.”

After the incident, Amankona was taken off the air. His exit from the channel was confirmed in August 2024. Now, backed by the Good Law Project led by barrister Jolyon Maugham, he is suing GB News for several claims. These include race discrimination, victimisation, whistleblowing detriment, unequal pay, and unfair dismissal. GB News has denied all accusations and called the claims “misconceived” and “without merit.”

Amankona has also said he reported racist behavior by two colleagues in June 2024 but says GB News took no immediate action. He said in a statement: “I tried to resolve this privately but failed. GB News says it stands for free speech and fairness, but my experience is different.”

On his final show, Amankona said: “I believe Suella Braverman is racist. She made racist remarks about British Pakistani men and grooming. Many British Pakistanis found her comments offensive, and I agree.”

His co-host, Darren Grimes, disagreed on air and told Amankona that calling someone a racist on the show was not allowed.

Amankona’s fundraising appeal, supported by the Good Law Project, aims to raise £20,000 for legal costs. So far, it has raised just over £1,700.

GB News has faced other controversies too. Last year, it was fined £100,000 by Ofcom for breaking impartiality rules during a program with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The channel is also appealing some regulatory decisions.

In 2023, GB News suspended and then fired former host Laurence Fox after sexist comments about a female journalist. Fox’s comments received thousands of complaints and were found to break broadcasting rules.

Amankona’s case adds to the ongoing debate about free speech, race, and fairness at GB News.
