Lucy Letby May Face New Charges for Baby Deaths at Two Hospitals

02 July, 2025 14:49

July 2, 2025 — England: Former nurse Lucy Letby could face new criminal charges, prosecutors confirmed this week. Police have given new evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) as part of an investigation into more baby deaths and medical collapses at hospitals where she worked.

Letby is already serving a life sentence for murdering 7 babies and trying to kill 6 more at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016. She was found guilty last year and is in prison for the rest of her life.

Now, police are looking into cases from as early as 2012. This includes her time working or training at Liverpool Women’s Hospital and other medical centers. The investigation is called Operation Hummingbird.

What Police and Prosecutors Say

  • Cheshire Police said they have sent a “full file of evidence” to the CPS.

  • The CPS is now reviewing the file to decide if more charges will be filed against Letby.

  • These charges could involve more baby deaths or serious injuries that happened years ago.

The CPS has not said how many new cases are included or how long the review will take.

Hospital Staff Also Under Investigation

In a separate part of the investigation, three former hospital bosses at Countess of Chester Hospital were arrested. They are being investigated for gross negligence manslaughter. This means police think they may have failed to act while babies were dying or being harmed.

They were questioned and later released on bail. Police are still collecting more information.

Background: Who Is Lucy Letby?

Lucy Letby, now 35 years old, worked as a neonatal nurse. She was arrested in 2018 after a high number of suspicious deaths in the baby unit. After a long trial in 2023, she was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the chance of release.

A public inquiry is also happening to understand how the hospital allowed the deaths to continue and why no action was taken earlier.

What Happens Next?

  • The CPS will decide if Letby should be charged again.

  • More details may be shared in the coming weeks or months.

  • The public inquiry will continue to gather evidence and will release a report in early 2026.
