Trump Warns Extra 10% Tariff for Countries Aligning with BRICS Policies

07 July, 2025 12:32

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to countries siding with BRICS policies that oppose American interests. In a social media post over the weekend, Trump announced an additional 10% tariff on any nation aligning with what he described as the “Anti-American policies of BRICS.” He emphasized that “there will be no exceptions to this policy.”

What’s Behind the Warning?

BRICS, an alliance originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded its global influence in recent years. The group now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—countries representing more than half of the world’s population.

Trump, who returned to office in January 2025, has long been critical of BRICS, accusing it of trying to undermine U.S. economic and political dominance. The president believes BRICS nations are challenging institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and promoting alternative currency systems that could weaken the U.S. dollar.

Tariffs Begin August 1

Although an initial deadline of July 9 had been set for nations to strike individual trade deals with the U.S., the Trump administration has confirmed that new tariffs will now take effect from August 1.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the move, saying that tariff letters would be sent to affected countries starting Monday, July 7. Each letter will outline new tariff rates unless bilateral agreements are finalized.

Trump told reporters: “They’re going to be tariffs. The tariffs are going to be tariffs.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed Trump’s stance, telling CNN: “If countries don’t come to the table, they will bounce back to the April 2 tariff levels on August 1.”

Current Trade Talks

As of now, the U.S. has only secured trade agreements with the UK and Vietnam. However, unresolved issues remain, particularly around UK steel exports, which are still subject to taxes.

In April 2025, Trump declared “Liberation Day” by announcing sweeping new tariffs to protect American industries. However, these were temporarily suspended to allow a three-month negotiation period, ending July 9.

Global Reactions & Rising Tensions

Trump’s latest announcement comes shortly after BRICS leaders publicly criticized U.S. tariff policies and called for reforms in global financial systems.

His administration’s tough approach to trade has raised concerns about a potential trade war and global economic instability, especially as the BRICS alliance grows in size and influence.

What’s Next?

With August 1 fast approaching, pressure is mounting on countries with close BRICS ties to either cut deals with Washington or face steeper tariffs. As Trump doubles down on economic nationalism, many analysts fear an intensifying divide between East and West.
