Pakistan Forms Special Committee to Counter India’s Water Aggression
ISLAMABAD: In response to India’s water-related policies, the federal government has decided to establish a special committee tasked with developing a comprehensive and technically grounded strategy to address the emerging challenges.
Federal Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, announced the formation of the committee, which will be led by the Planning Commission and comprise engineering experts. The initiative aims to tackle the technical issues stemming from India’s water moves through expert input rather than political debate.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Engineers’ Lounge in Lahore, Ahsan Iqbal detailed that the committee would include representatives from prominent engineering institutions such as the Institution of Engineers Pakistan (IEP), Pakistan Engineering Congress, Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Pakistan (IEEEP), among others.
The minister also revealed plans to establish a “Federation of Engineering Institutions of Pakistan” to enhance collaboration among engineering bodies across the country.
Iqbal emphasized that the committee will engage engineers from all provinces in drafting a national water policy and providing technical recommendations. He underscored that inter-provincial technical matters should be addressed professionally rather than politically.
IEP Secretary General and engineer, Ameer Zamir Khan, also spoke at the event. He urged political leaders to set aside provincial rivalries and welcomed the move to unite engineering institutions under the Planning Commission. He pledged full support from Pakistan’s engineering community — numbering in the hundreds of thousands — in confronting India’s water aggression and contributing to a united, technical solution.
