Air India Crash Raises Serious Questions Over Pilot’s Mental Health, Flight Clearance

17 July, 2025 14:17

Shocking revelations have emerged regarding the Air India crash in Hyderabad, highlighting serious concerns about the mental health of pilots and the airline’s decision to grant flight clearance despite these issues.

The initial investigation report published on July 12 made no mention of the pilot’s mental health. Attempts by the Modi government and Air India to block the release of this report were thwarted when British newspaper The Telegraph and the New York Post brought crucial details to light.

According to reports by The Telegraph and the New York Post, pilots at Air India suffered from depression and other mental health problems. At the time of the crash, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner was under the control of Captain Sumit Sabharwal.

The Telegraph revealed that Captain Sabharwal had been struggling with mental health issues and stress for several years and had taken multiple medical leaves. Despite these challenges, Air India allowed him to return to flying duties.

In 2023, despite dealing with mental health difficulties and the grief of losing his mother, the pilot was medically cleared to fly by Air India. Recently, he had been considering retirement to care for his elderly father.

The New York Post reported that the initial investigation pointed to the pressing of the fuel cutoff button as the central cause of the crash.

Air India’s spokesperson confirmed only that the pilot’s medical records had been handed over to investigators. Meanwhile, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson dismissed the reports as “rumors and sensationalism,” attempting to undermine the fact-finding process.

The Indian Commercial Pilots Association claimed that Air India ignored the pilot’s personal condition, further complicating the issue.

The tragic crash in Ahmedabad on June 12 resulted in the deaths of 270 people, as reported by the New York Post. So far, Air India has not issued any official statement regarding the pilot’s mental health.

Allowing the pilot to control the aircraft despite his poor mental condition is a clear sign of Air India’s incompetence. This crash proves that Air India places no value on human lives.
