Karachi’s water supply has been severely affected following a major power outage at the Gharo Pumping Station and filtration plant, reported on Saturday. The disruption occurred after a cable fault in the K-Electric supply line around 3 PM on Friday.
Pumping Completely Halted
According to a Water Corporation spokesperson, “due to a cable fault in the K-Electric supply line around 3 PM on Friday, the water pumping has been completely halted.” The issue remains unresolved, and repairs are still underway.
Multiple Areas Affected
The power failure has disrupted water supply to several key areas, including Port Qasim, Bin Qasim Town, Shah Faisal Town, PNS Mehran, PAF Base Faisal, and Karsaz. The Gharo station, which supplies about 30 million gallons of water daily to Karachi, is currently non-operational due to the outage.
Efforts Underway to Resolve the Fault
The spokesperson noted that “Water Corporation officials are in continuous contact with K-Electric management to resolve the fault as soon as possible.”
Karachi’s Ongoing Water Crisis
This disruption has worsened the ongoing water crisis in Karachi. “People in most parts of the city are compelled to buy costly tanker water for everyday use,” highlighting the urgent need for a more stable water supply system.
