No Forgiveness for 9 May Violence, Say Officials

23 July, 2025 18:09

Islamabad: People involved in the 9 May 2023 attacks on military buildings and martyrs’ memorials have been given strict punishments by courts. These attacks took place across the country during violent protests, where protesters damaged state buildings, army installations, and sacred memorials of national martyrs. The government and Pakistan Army have made it clear that such acts are unacceptable and will not be forgiven.

Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir, while speaking in Lahore on 9 May 2024, stated that those behind the 9 May attacks would be brought to justice under the law. A Corps Commanders Conference held on 5 March 2024 also confirmed that all planners, supporters, and those involved in these attacks would be held accountable.

Military courts, after following proper legal procedures, announced sentences for many of the accused. On 21 December 2024, 25 people were punished, followed by another 60 on 26 December 2024 after evidence was presented. Later, on 2 January 2025, 19 individuals were forgiven after they submitted formal apology requests.

Anti-terrorism courts have also announced punishments based on solid proof. In Lahore, political leaders including Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mehmood ur Rasheed, Ijaz Chaudhry, and Sarfraz Cheema were sentenced to 10 years in jail each. In Sargodha, the court sentenced 32 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers, including opposition leader Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar and Ahmad Chattha, to 10 years in prison as well.

Director General ISPR stated clearly that the events of 9 May are not just a matter for the army, but for all Pakistani citizens. He said that those who attacked military buildings and martyrs’ memorials would not be forgiven under any circumstances. Officials believe that these punishments show the state’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of martyrs and ensuring that such acts are never repeated. The government has made it clear that no form of violence, chaos, or attack on national dignity will be tolerated.
