Electric Bus Service to Begin in These Punjab Cities on August 14

28 July, 2025 14:42

The Punjab government is launching a new electric green bus service in the Sargodha Division. This step is aimed at giving people a clean, affordable, and eco-friendly way to travel.

According to the Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), the first phase will start on August 14. In this phase:

  • 48 buses will run in Sargodha

  • 12 buses will operate in Khushab

  • 6 buses each will run in Mianwali and Bhakkar

The good news is that students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities can travel free on these green buses.

Officials say this project will help improve public transport and promote clean travel across the region.

Electric Tram Coming to Lahore

The Punjab government is also planning to launch an electric tram in Lahore. The tram has been ordered from China, and reports suggest the first shipment has arrived. However, the government hasn’t officially confirmed it yet.

The pilot project will likely run from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura or Jallo Park along Canal Road. Each tram can carry 250 passengers and travel 27 km on just a 10-minute charge.

If successful, this tram system will also be introduced in Gujranwala and Faisalabad.

Electric Bus Service Already Running in Lahore

Earlier this year, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif launched the first electric bus service in Lahore. These buses have 30 seats and can carry up to 80 passengers.

They come with Wi-Fi, USB ports, GPS, and special ramps for people with disabilities. To ensure safety, the buses also have anti-slip flooring and security cameras.
