U.S. Imposes 19% Tariff on Pakistan, India Hit with 25%
The U.S. has imposed a 19% tariff on Pakistan while imposing stricter measures on India, thereby giving Pakistan a relative concession.
According to the White House, the Trump administration has imposed a 19% retaliatory tariff on Pakistani products, whereas a 25% tariff has been imposed on Indian products.
This means that among the three major South Asian countries, Pakistan has been given the most lenient treatment.
Other countries facing the same 19% tariff as Pakistan include Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Cambodia. Countries facing a 20% tariff—similar to Bangladesh—include Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Taiwan.
Countries subjected to a 25% tariff like India include Kazakhstan, Tunisia, and Moldova.
This move is the result of several high-level diplomatic engagements, including a meeting between Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir and U.S. President Donald Trump, discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a recent meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and the U.S. Secretary of State, and meetings between Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
