Police identify suspect in Khawaja Shamsul Islam’s murder

KARACHI: Police have identified the suspect involved in the murder of senior lawyer Khawaja Shamsul Islam.

According to DIG South Asad Raza, the killer is Imran Afridi, the son of Khawaja Shamsul Islam’s former gunman. The DIG revealed that Imran had also attacked the lawyer a few months earlier. The suspect claims he held the lawyer responsible for his father’s death in 2021.

Police have launched a manhunt and formed a strategy to arrest the accused. Checkpoints have been set up at various exit points of Karachi, including bus terminals at Sohrab Goth and roads leading out of the city, to prevent his escape.

Meanwhile, CCTV footage has surfaced showing the attack on Khawaja Shamsul Islam in DHA Phase 6. In the video, a masked man dressed in shalwar kameez can be seen opening fire.

Khawaja Shamsul Islam was a respected and experienced civil lawyer in Karachi. He had fought over 500 cases and handled high-value property disputes worth billions of rupees.

He was also representing a high-profile case regarding the Mohatta Palace (Fatima Jinnah’s residence), which involved plans to convert the property into a girls’ hostel and dental college.

This was not the first attack on him. In November 2024, he survived a shooting and sustained an injury to his hand. Police have begun collecting evidence and are continuing their investigation into the latest incident.
