Top TikTok Stars Suzy Al Ordoniya, Alia Qamaron, and Others Arrested in Egypt

05 August, 2025 13:44

Egyptian authorities have launched a sweeping crackdown on popular TikTok content creators, detaining several high-profile influencers accused of spreading “indecent” content online.

Among those arrested are Suzy al-Ordoniya, Alia Qamaron, Um Mekka, Um Sajda, and Qamr al-Wekala, all known for their bold dance routines and street-life videos. Mohamed Abdel Aaty and other male content creators were also taken into custody. The arrests reportedly follow accusations that the influencers posted content purely for views and financial gain.

The crackdown comes amid growing tensions over social media norms in the majority-Muslim country, where many creators have found fame—and fortune—by sharing videos that flaunt flashy lifestyles and defy traditional expectations. Egyptian law enforcement said those detained confessed to producing such content for popularity and income.

Rights groups have condemned the arrests, calling them part of a broader campaign to stifle free expression. The detentions were preceded by a coordinated smear campaign online and a formal complaint filed by 32 lawyers, who argued that the creators’ videos posed a threat to young people.

Digital rights advocates warn this latest move serves as a stark warning to Egypt’s millions of internet users: online visibility and independence—particularly for women—may come at a high cost.

This is not the first time Egyptian authorities have targeted social media influencers. Earlier, dancer and influencer Linda Martino was arrested over videos authorities deemed morally inappropriate. Since 2020, a growing number of female and working-class content creators have faced prosecution under vague morality and cybercrime laws.

The ongoing clampdown has also had chilling effects on independent journalism, satire, and literature, contributing to a broader erosion of free expression in Egypt.
