Narendra Modi’s Popularity on X Exposed — Heavy Reliance on Bots
Indian Prime Minister Modi is actively using bots to inflate his popularity on X. More than half of Modi’s followers on X are fake and public support is merely an illusion.
According to a recent report by Grok, between 40% and 60% of Modi’s 109 million followers may be fake or automated bot accounts. This amounts to an estimated 44 to 65 million suspicious accounts. Grok noted that exact figures cannot be confirmed without access to X’s internal data, and that the platform periodically removes fake accounts and bots.
From 2018 to 2025, various research reports have raised questions over the authenticity of Modi’s followers. A 2012 analysis found that 46% of his followers were fake and 41% inactive, with research highlighting the significant role of bots in shaping electoral narratives.
A 2017 Twitter audit reported that only 37.4% of Modi’s followers were genuine, while the rest were either suspicious or bots. Other research has uncovered evidence of hashtags and trends being systematically manipulated for electoral purposes through the use of advanced AI and bots.
During the 2019 election campaign, the hashtag #TNwelcomesModi reportedly generated record amounts of fake traffic through bot activity.
The findings suggest that bots, fake followers, and AI have become a new tool in Modi’s political strategy. Data and research collectively indicate that the Prime Minister’s online popularity is largely artificial and fabricated.
