M20 Motorway Closed After Tractor Falls from Bridge Near Wrotham

18 August, 2025 18:53

Kent, Monday, August 18, 2025 – The M20 motorway in Kent has been shut down in both directions after a tractor fell from a bridge onto the road. The serious incident happened near Wrotham at around 11:17 am, forcing a major closure between Swanley and Addington.

Tractor Falls onto M20 Central Reservation

According to Kent Police, the accident started with a two-vehicle collision on the A227 overbridge. The tractor broke through barriers and crashed down onto the central reservation of the M20, between junctions 2 and 3.

Emergency Response

Kent Fire and Rescue Service, along with South East Coast Ambulance Service, quickly arrived at the scene. A man with serious injuries was airlifted to hospital by helicopter. Police confirmed the road and the A227 bridge remain closed while investigations continue.

Motorists Face Long Delays

National Highways issued a warning to drivers, saying the motorway is expected to stay closed for several hours. Heavy traffic has already built up, and drivers are advised to use alternative routes or delay their journeys.

A spokesperson for National Highways said:
“The M20 in Kent is closed in both directions between J3 (Addington) and J1 (Swanley) after a collision, which led to a vehicle falling from an overbridge. Emergency services and traffic officers are on site. Please plan ahead and allow extra time.”

Investigation Underway

Police are investigating how the tractor lost control and fell from the bridge. Pictures from the scene show police cars on Wrotham Hill bridge and queues of traffic building along the motorway.

This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more details become available.
