Askole Hero Maz Asko Summits Spantik, Dedicates Climb to Late Relative

18 August, 2025 21:07

Muhammad Abbas Zafar, affectionately known as Maz Asko, has made history by successfully summiting the 7,027-meter Spantik Peak, becoming the first person from Askole and the Braldo Valley to climb any major mountain peak.

Sharing the news on social media, Maz wrote:
“Alhumdulillah Spantik Summit 7027m. Presenting this summit to my dear Phophi who passed away on 15 August.”
His emotional dedication has touched hearts across the mountaineering community and beyond.

Maz completed the climb as part of an expedition organized by his company, K2 Explore Pakistan, alongside a team of foreign climbers. Known for guiding international trekking groups through some of Pakistan’s most challenging terrains, Maz is building a reputation not just as a climber, but also as a passionate advocate for sustainable tourism in the Karakoram region.

Spantik, also known as Golden Peak, is located in the Shigar Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan and is considered a challenging but rewarding climb. The summit offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, including Rakaposhi and Diran. It’s a dream climb for many aspiring mountaineers.

Hailing from the remote village of Askole, the last human settlement before K2 base camp, Maz’s achievement is particularly inspiring. Askole is home to many unsung heroes of the mountains — porters, cooks, and guides — who support international expeditions but rarely get global recognition.

This summit is more than a personal milestone; it’s a proud moment for Braldo Valley, a region often overlooked in mainstream media despite its vital role in high-altitude trekking and tourism. Maz’s climb shines a light on the potential of local climbers who are now stepping into the global spotlight.

Local residents, trekking groups, and fellow climbers have praised Maz for his dedication, courage, and for setting a powerful example for the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan.
