Punjab update transfer fee for cars between 1000cc – 1800cc

Govt imposes 40% tariff on used car imports
The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has decided to increase vehicle registration and transfer fees, effective from September 1, 2025. However, the exact revised rates have not yet been officially announced.
Currently, the transfer fee is set at Rs550 for motorcycles and scooters. For heavy transport vehicles (HTVs), the fee stands at Rs5,500. Vehicles with an engine capacity of up to 1000cc are charged Rs2,750, while those between 1000cc and 1800cc are charged Rs5,500. For vehicles above 1800cc, the transfer fee is Rs11,000.
Reports suggest that the new increase will be applied across all categories, and officials have advised citizens to complete their vehicle transfers before September 1 to avoid paying the higher charges.
Just last month, the Punjab government also introduced a new registration system. Under this system, number plates will now be issued in the name of the owner instead of the vehicle. All registrations will be linked with the owner’s ID card.
As per the new rules, the number plate will stay with the previous owner and will not transfer with the vehicle. Buyers of used cars or bikes will be issued fresh number plates or may use valid existing ones if available. Owners will also have the option to surrender their old plate and request a new one.
This step aims to improve the vehicle registration process and bring more transparency to ownership records in Punjab.
