Islamabad Faces Higher Bills as CDA Raises Water and Sewerage Charges
Islamabad, August 25, 2025 – The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced a major increase in water and sewerage charges for residents of Islamabad. The decision was recently approved by the CDA board and will directly affect around 80,000 consumers in the city. The charges will be collected according to the size of residential and commercial plots.
At present, CDA earns about Rs40 million every year from its Water and Sanitation Directorate. However, the annual expenses of the directorate have reached nearly Rs4 billion. This huge gap has forced the authority to revise its water and sewerage tariffs.
The new tariff proposal will be shared in a public hearing on September 3, 2025, at the Convention Centre, Islamabad. The session will continue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All citizens, including residents and stakeholders, are invited to attend and give their feedback before the final decision is made.
The CDA Water Directorate has already issued a formal public notice to inform residents about the hearing. Officials believe that revising the charges is the only way to meet rising operational costs.
For years, CDA has been struggling with a revenue deficit in its water and sanitation services. Officials say that the current rates are very low compared to the actual expenses. The new revision aims to reduce this imbalance and improve the quality of services for citizens.
Many residents, however, are expected to raise concerns about the sudden increase in charges. The public hearing will allow them to voice their suggestions and objections. After reviewing public opinion, the CDA board will give final approval for the implementation of new rates.
This step by CDA highlights the growing financial challenges faced by the authority and the urgent need to find a balance between income and expenditures.
