How to apply for energy-saving fans under govt plan

The federal government has approved a nationwide program to replace 88 million old fans in Pakistan with new energy-saving models over the next 10 years. The plan will cost more than Rs350 billion and aims to reduce electricity use and ease pressure on the national grid.

What the Programme Includes

The National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA) has designed the scheme, which will cover:

• 50 million fans in rural households

• 38 million fans in urban households

The project is officially named the Prime Minister’s Fan Replacement Programme. The Ministry of Finance has already allocated Rs2 billion to support its launch.

How It Works

• Consumers can buy energy-efficient fans on easy installments.

• Payments will be added directly to monthly electricity bills.

• Financing will be provided by banks for 18 months at KIBOR + 2%.

• The government has set aside Rs1.5 billion as a risk guarantee.

• Only consumers with a good history of paying electricity bills on time will be eligible.

• Applications can be submitted online through NEECA’s portal.

Fan manufacturers will handle the installation, safe disposal of old fans, and after-sales service.

Why It Matters

Experts say cooling appliances like fans and air conditioners push Pakistan’s electricity demand to more than 17,000 MW in summer. Out of this, fans alone consume nearly 12,000 MW.

By replacing old and inefficient fans, the program could cut peak demand by up to 5,000 MW, helping the country save energy and reduce load on the system during hot months.

Voluntary but Impactful

The programme is voluntary, meaning households can choose to join or not. But officials believe if widely adopted, it could play a big role in solving Pakistan’s energy crisis.
