Tuesday, September 16, 2025: In a major diplomatic development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to meet United States President Donald Trump on September 25 during the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
According to diplomatic insiders, the meeting will also be joined by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir. This high-level huddle is being arranged with the consultation and support of Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Key Agenda of the Meeting
Sources revealed that the talks will cover multiple important issues. The agenda includes the flood crisis in Pakistan, the regional impact of the Israeli attack on Qatar, and the Pakistan-India situation.
Diplomatic officials also said both Riyadh and Doha have endorsed the meeting between Shehbaz Sharif and Donald Trump. However, Pakistan’s embassy has not confirmed or denied the possibility of the meeting.
Strengthening Pakistan-US Relations
The meeting comes at a time when Pakistan-US relations are improving. Earlier in May, President Trump successfully brokered a ceasefire between Pakistan and India after weeks of armed conflict.
On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephonic call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Both sides expressed their resolve to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, economy, and counter-terrorism.
Back in July, Dar also met Rubio in person. They discussed regional peace, bilateral trade, and a roadmap for stronger economic ties. Soon after, Pakistan and the US signed a trade agreement that reduces tariffs, increases market access, and aims to boost investments.
Economic and Strategic Developments
Under the recent trade agreement, Pakistan will benefit from lower tariffs on its exports to the US. It also opens doors for developing oil reserves and long-term economic cooperation.
Earlier this month, Pakistan secured $500 million investment in its critical minerals sector from United States Strategic Metals (USSM).
At the same time, Army Chief Asim Munir has been playing a vital role in building relations with Washington. His rare one-on-one meeting with Donald Trump in June, followed by another US visit in August for the Centcom change of command ceremony, highlights the growing military-to-military engagement.
During his August trip, he also met Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine.
The possible Shehbaz-Trump meeting on September 25 could mark a new chapter in Pakistan-US diplomatic relations. It reflects growing trust, wider cooperation, and support from Gulf allies Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
