PM Shehbaz Delivers Powerful Speech at UNGA, Warns India, Calls for Palestinian State
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif delivered a wide-ranging address at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where delegates welcomed him with applause. He began his speech with the recitation of the Holy Quran and praised the efforts of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the United Nations.
Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s foreign policy is based on mutual respect and cooperation, and the country seeks peaceful solutions to conflicts. He noted that the Pahalgam incident was politicized but stressed that Pakistan responded strongly to recent Indian aggression along the eastern border.
The prime minister declared that Pakistan’s air force shot down seven Indian fighter jets in response to violations targeting innocent civilians. “India is playing a political game, but every Pakistani has stood like a wall of steel against aggression,” he said. He warned that any violation of the Indus Waters Treaty would be considered an act of war, adding that water is a lifeline for 240 million Pakistanis.
Sharif also accused India of rejecting Pakistan’s offer for a neutral investigation into the Pahalgam attack, calling it a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty. He said Pakistan exercised its right to self-defense and responded with full force. “India will always remember Pakistan’s historic response,” he declared, crediting Pakistan’s armed forces under Field Marshal Asim Munir for defending the nation.
On global issues, Sharif strongly condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank, calling the killing of Palestinians “genocide and terrorism.” He described the Gaza tragedy as a failure of the international community. “Pakistan demands the immediate establishment of an independent Palestinian state,” he said, recalling that Pakistan recognized Palestine in 1988. He urged the world to follow suit.
The prime minister thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for intervening to secure a ceasefire between Pakistan and India, and even announced Pakistan’s nomination of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. He said any credit for a Gaza ceasefire should also go to Trump.
Sharif further highlighted Pakistan’s struggle against terrorism, saying banned outfits such as TTP, BLA, and Majid Brigade continue to target the country. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s desire for a peaceful Afghanistan but called on the interim Afghan government to respect human rights.
Turning to climate change, the prime minister urged global cooperation. He said Pakistan had been devastated by recent floods, which destroyed hundreds of villages and thousands of crops. “We must act together to tackle climate change,” he stressed.
Shehbaz Sharif’s speech combined strong warnings to India with calls for justice in Palestine, regional peace, counterterrorism, and climate action, underlining Pakistan’s active role in global diplomacy.
