Punjab Government Plans New Airport in Lahore – do you know the location?

The Punjab government is considering the construction of a new airport in Lahore to meet the growing demand for air travel. Although the project is still in its early planning stage, officials are discussing possible costs and the financial model needed to move it forward. The aim is to reduce pressure on the existing Allama Iqbal International Airport and improve Lahore’s air connectivity.

The proposed airport is expected to create new jobs and attract both local and foreign investment. However, the government has not yet announced a final timeline or confirmed the funding sources. Authorities are currently reviewing technical requirements and long-term infrastructure needs before presenting the final plan.

According to initial proposals, the Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has suggested a location near Ravi City, close to the M-3 Motorway. This site would be nearly 30 kilometers from Allama Iqbal International Airport. The location is being considered due to available land and future urban development plans along the Ravi River corridor.

Allama Iqbal International Airport, the second-largest civil airport in Pakistan, continues to serve a large number of passengers from Lahore and other parts of Punjab. It was originally known as Lahore International Airport and renamed in honor of Allama Muhammad Iqbal. The airport includes three terminals – the main passenger terminal, a dedicated Hajj terminal, and a cargo terminal. It is located about 15 kilometers from Lahore’s city center.

With air traffic increasing every year, experts believe a second airport could support Lahore’s growth and reduce congestion. The final decision will depend on feasibility studies and government approval. More updates are expected once planning reaches an advanced stage.
