US Pushes for UN Approval to Deploy Gaza Peace Force Under Trump Ceasefire Plan
Washington: The United States is preparing a United Nations Security Council resolution to authorize the deployment of a multinational peace force in Gaza, aimed at enforcing the US-brokered ceasefire.
The proposed International Stabilization Force (ISF) would be responsible for demilitarizing Gaza and training a new Palestinian police force, sources familiar with the plan said.
Under the draft plan, US troops will not operate inside Gaza but will take part in coordination efforts from outside the territory. The force would work under a UN mandate, which many potential participant nations have demanded before joining.
The ISF forms a key part of former President Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza ceasefire plan, which also includes reconstruction efforts and long-term security arrangements for the enclave.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed last month during his visit to Israel that several countries are open to joining the force — but only with “an international mandate,” either through a UN resolution or a formal global agreement.
If approved, the ISF would operate under a unified command, coordinating closely with Israel and Egypt. A US-led coordination center has already been set up in southern Israel, with representatives from around 40 nations and international organizations managing the humanitarian and reconstruction phases of the ceasefire plan.
According to the draft, the ISF and a newly trained Palestinian police force would work together to maintain security and prevent Hamas from rearming. This includes dismantling remaining Hamas military infrastructure, a task that could put the international force in direct confrontation with the militant group.
Many countries remain cautious about the disarmament clause, saying it could draw them into combat operations.
Despite these challenges, Washington hopes the UN will approve the resolution soon to solidify the ceasefire and launch reconstruction efforts in war-torn Gaza.
