Abigail Spanberger Becomes Virginia’s First Female Governor

05 November, 2025 12:25

RICHMOND, Va. — Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat and former congresswoman, has been elected the next governor of Virginia. She won Tuesday’s election against Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.

In her victory speech, Spanberger said she plans to serve all Virginians, no matter who they voted for.

“My intent is to serve all Virginians, and that means that I will listen to you,” she told a cheering crowd. “I will work for you and with you.”

Spanberger also thanked Earle-Sears for a “hard-fought race” and for her military service, asking her supporters to “wish her and her family well.”

The former CIA officer will be Virginia’s first female governor. She said her win shows that voters want unity and practical solutions over political fights.

“We sent a message to every corner of the Commonwealth,” Spanberger said. “In 2025, Virginia chose pragmatism over partisanship.”
