PM Shehbaz Withdraws Immunity Clause from 27th Constitutional Amendment
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the removal of a clause in the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment that sought legal immunity for the office of the Prime Minister.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said that upon his return from Azerbaijan, he was informed that some party senators had proposed an amendment in the Senate to include the Prime Minister’s immunity.
He clarified that this clause was not part of the draft approved by the federal cabinet, and he has ordered its immediate withdrawal.
Shehbaz Sharif said, “An elected Prime Minister is fully accountable before the law and the people.”
The 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill was presented in the Senate a day earlier. It reportedly included a proposal to grant lifelong immunity to the President of Pakistan. Later, reports suggested that the word “Prime Minister” would also be added to Article 248, which already provides protection to the President.
However, following the Prime Minister’s direction, the immunity clause for the Prime Minister will now be removed from the proposed amendment.
