PM Shehbaz Hails Passage of 27th Amendment, Acknowledges Coalition Partners and Discusses National Security

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif delivered an address to the National Assembly following the successful passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, a significant step toward strengthening Pakistan’s legal and political framework. The bill, which aims to reform the military command structure and establish a Federal Constitutional Court, has garnered widespread support in Parliament.

In his speech, PM Shehbaz commended the legislators for their “rare spirit of cohesion” and their collective effort in passing the bill, which he described as essential for enhancing inter-provincial harmony and improving the justice system. “On behalf of all party leaders and myself, I extend congratulations to every member for securing this historic mandate,” the Prime Minister said, acknowledging the crucial vote of 234 members, which he saw as a reflection of national unity.

The Prime Minister took a moment to thank President Asif Ali Zardari and the leaders of all coalition parties, crediting them for their trust and cooperation in ensuring the bill’s passage. He emphasized that “Pakistan’s diplomatic achievements and our gradually improving economic situation are a reflection of the unity we have fostered. We must continue to work together for the country’s development and prosperity.”

The passage of the 27th Amendment Bill is now set to move forward to presidential assent, marking the completion of one of the most important constitutional reforms in decades. The bill is poised to overhaul key components of the military command structure and establish new judicial mechanisms aimed at improving Pakistan’s federal system.

Tribute to Senator Irfan Siddiqui

In addition to political matters, PM Shehbaz took a moment to pay tribute to the late Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a senior member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), who had dedicated his life to the party and its objectives. The Prime Minister expressed his sorrow at Siddiqui’s passing, acknowledging his significant contributions to Pakistan’s political landscape.

Addressing Security Concerns

Shifting focus to the country’s security situation, PM Shehbaz condemned recent acts of terrorism, including the attack in Wana, which he referred to as a “cowardly” act that tragically reminded the nation of the Army Public School tragedy. The Prime Minister confirmed that the militants responsible for the attack, some of whom originated from Afghanistan, have been neutralized by Pakistani forces.

Furthermore, he condemned the terrorist attack at the Islamabad District Courts, which claimed the lives of twelve individuals. PM Sharif also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and condemned the involvement of extremists in both the Wana and Islamabad incidents.

“We must continue to work together for the country’s development and prosperity,” he reiterated, while also paying tribute to the armed forces for their successful operation, which led to the safe recovery of students and teachers held captive during the Wana operation.

The Prime Minister’s speech highlighted the government’s commitment to both constitutional reforms and ensuring national security, underscoring the need for unity in the face of internal and external challenges.
