Rashid Minhas 55th Martyrdom Anniversary; An Immortal Story of Sacrifice for the Motherland

The 55th martyrdom anniversary of Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed, recipient of Pakistan’s highest military award, Nishan-e-Haider, is being observed with solemn respect. He remains a shining symbol of patriotism, courage, devotion to duty and loyalty to the motherland.

Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas was born on February 17, 1951, in Karachi. He joined the Pakistan Air Force and was commissioned into the 51st GD(P) Course on March 14, 1971.

After receiving his commission, Rashid Minhas was posted to No. 2 Squadron at Maripur, now known as Masroor Air Base in Karachi, for his Operational Conversion Course.

On August 20, 1971, Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas took off from Masroor Air Base for a routine training flight. During the flight, his instructor pilot, Flight Lieutenant M. M. Alam, attempted to take control of the aircraft and divert it towards India.

Realising the gravity of the situation, Rashid Minhas made determined efforts to regain control of the aircraft and turn it back towards Pakistan. Despite being close to the Indian border, he continued his struggle to prevent the aircraft from being taken out of Pakistan.

In an extraordinary act of courage, Rashid Minhas ultimately turned the aircraft towards the ground. The aircraft crashed approximately 32 miles from the Indian border, and the young pilot embraced martyrdom.

Rashid Minhas sacrificed his life to prevent the aircraft from being taken across the border. His final act demonstrated extraordinary courage and an unwavering commitment to Pakistan’s sovereignty and national honour.

In recognition of his supreme sacrifice, Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military gallantry award.

Rashid Minhas remains an enduring symbol of courage and patriotism for the Pakistan Air Force and the entire nation. His sacrifice continues to inspire generations with the message that devotion to duty, courage in the face of adversity and commitment to the defence of the motherland can leave an everlasting mark on history.
