Army Chief Assures Full Security for Sri Lankan Cricket Team: Naqvi
Islamabad: Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi said on Thursday that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir has assured complete security for the Sri Lankan cricket team during its ongoing tour of Pakistan.
Naqvi said the assurance was personally conveyed to Sri Lankan officials to address their safety concerns. He added that the Sri Lankan President had contacted him directly, and both sides discussed detailed security arrangements.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman said that although Sri Lankan authorities initially expressed some reservations after recent incidents, Pakistan’s leadership — including the Army Chief — guaranteed full protection for visiting players and staff.
Naqvi praised the Sri Lankan government’s decision to continue the tour, calling it a sign of courage and trust in Pakistan. He also stated that investigations have traced recent terrorist activities in Islamabad back to Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar told the Senate that Sri Lanka has assured Pakistan of its full support in fighting terrorism.
The Senate also unanimously passed a resolution presented by the law minister to honour Sri Lanka’s decision to continue the cricket series. The resolution described Sri Lanka’s move as an act of bravery and solidarity with Pakistan.
Interior Minister Naqvi thanked the House for passing the resolution, saying it reflected the strong friendship and mutual respect between the two nations.
