Did Virat Kohli retire from test cricket too soon? Shreevats Goswami starts discussion
Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) wicketkeeper-batter Shreevats Goswami has started a big discussion on social media about India’s recent problems in Test cricket. His post suggested that the team is badly missing the energy and presence of retired star Virat Kohli.
This debate began at a time when the Indian team, led by Rishab Pant, is close to facing a rare home Test series defeat against South Africa.
In the second Test in Guwahati, South Africa completely dominated. India were bowled out for just 201 in their first innings, while the visitors scored a huge 489. The Indian batting collapse—where the team lost six wickets for only 27 runs—has raised serious questions about the team’s current performance and direction.
South Africa, already leading the two-match series 1-0, finished Day 3 with a strong lead of 314 runs. This has put India on the edge of losing a second home series in two consecutive years.
Goswami expressed his frustration on X (formerly Twitter), saying that Virat Kohli retired too early from Test cricket. He argued that the team could still use his presence and leadership in the longest format of the game.
He wrote, “Ideally Virat should have left playing ODIs & continued playing Test cricket until he had nothing to give. Test cricket misses him. Not just as a player but just the energy he brought, the love & passion playing for India where he made the team believe that they can win in any condition.”
His words capture the concerns of many fans and cricket experts who feel that the passion, confidence, and fearless attitude of the Virat Kohli era are missing in the current Indian Test team.
