Punjab govt to introduce smart meters for accurate water billing
The Punjab government has announced a major step to reduce excessive water use. Now, consumers will have to pay strictly according to their water consumption.
The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) in Lahore has issued its first tender to buy modern smart water meters. Wasa plans to purchase 10,000 meters at a cost of Rs500 million. These meters will have an automated system for meter reading, making billing more accurate. The pilot project will start in Johar Town A-1 Block.
The Wasa managing director said that consumers will get online access to check their meter readings. Installing a smart meter will cost Rs35,000, but citizens can also get them through easy instalments.
To support the project, Wasa has set up a revolving fund for purchasing water meters. The agency plans to expand the program by buying meters three times a year through tenders.
This move aims to make water usage more efficient and ensure that people pay fairly for the water they use.
