Pakistan Navy Celebrates ‘Hangor Day’ to Honour 1971 Naval Heroics

09 December, 2025 12:43

The Pakistan Navy is observing Hangor Day today to commemorate the legendary bravery of the submarine PNS Hangor, a symbol of Pakistan’s formidable maritime defense and sacrifice.

Hangor Day marks the historic events of December 9, 1971, when the Pakistan Navy submarine PNS Hangor sank the Indian Navy’s frigate INS Khukri and severely damaged INS Kirpan, delivering a decisive blow to Indian naval pride. This remains one of the most remarkable submarine actions in naval history.

Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir paid rich tribute to the crew of Hangor, stating that the submariners wrote a glorious chapter of courage that “remains etched in the enemy’s memory.”

Field Marshal Munir said that just as the Pakistan Navy served as a “leaden wall” for the enemy in 1971, it continues to stand today as an “iron wall” safeguarding the country’s maritime borders. He added that Hangor Day reminds the nation that Pakistan desires peace but remains unwavering in its commitment to sovereignty and national defence.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, in his message, said that the Pakistan Navy continues to uphold the proud legacy of Hangor. He announced that eight modern Hangor-class submarines will soon join the naval fleet, further strengthening Pakistan’s underwater warfare capabilities.

Admiral Ashraf reaffirmed that the Pakistan Navy, following its glorious traditions, is always prepared to defend the country and “bite the enemy’s teeth on every front.”

To mark the occasion, the Pakistan Navy has released a special documentary titled “Hadaf”. The film is based on the war diary of Vice Admiral (Retd) Ahmed Tasneem, who commanded PNS Hangor during the 1971 operation.

The documentary highlights the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of Pakistan Navy submariners and serves as a tribute to their lasting legacy.
