Pakistan Warns India’s Water Manipulation Threatens Food and Economic Security
Islamabad, December 19, 2025: Pakistan has warned that India’s recent actions regarding the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) pose a serious threat to its food and economic security.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar described India’s unilateral suspension of the treaty in April 2025 as a “weaponization of water resources” that could trigger a humanitarian crisis.
Diplomatic Briefing to Foreign Envoys
Dar addressed foreign diplomats, expressing concern that India’s actions disrupt the flow of vital water for Pakistan’s agriculture. He said, “Indian manipulation of water at critical times of our agriculture cycle directly threatens the lives and livelihoods of our citizens, as well as the country’s food and economic security.”
He emphasized that the Indus Water Treaty is a key agreement ensuring peace and stability in South Asia. According to Dar, India has stopped sharing hydrological data and disrupted the joint monitoring mechanisms outlined in the treaty, increasing tensions between the two countries.
Threats to Agriculture and Economy
Pakistan relies heavily on Indus Basin waters for irrigation and food production. Dar warned that any disruption in water supply could have severe consequences for farmers, food production, and overall economic stability.
“The suspension of treaty obligations is not just a technical violation; it endangers millions of lives and livelihoods,” he added, urging the international community to recognize the threat posed by India’s actions.
Dar’s briefing underscores Pakistan’s call for India to resume full compliance with the Indus Water Treaty, restore data-sharing mechanisms, and ensure water flows are not manipulated to create political or economic pressure.
