25 December, 2025 16:54

Premier League club Sunderland AFC has confirmed the sudden passing of non-executive director Patrick Treuer, who died unexpectedly overnight, according to the Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC).

The club paid tribute to Treuer, stating that he will be “greatly missed” after playing a pivotal role in Sunderland’s journey from League One to the Premier League. Treuer, aged 52, joined the Black Cats’ board in 2021, taking over as finance director following Kyrell Louis-Dreyfus’ arrival and succeeding Angela Lowes.

In a statement, Sunderland said: “Sunderland AFC is deeply saddened by the passing of Patrick Treuer. One of the Club’s Non-Executive Directors, Patrick had also held the position of Chief Financial Officer of the Louis Dreyfus Company B.V. since 2014. Patrick played an active role in SAFC’s journey from League One to the Premier League and he will be greatly missed. All at SAFC send their heartfelt condolences to Patrick’s family and loved ones at this immensely difficult time.”

LDC also expressed sorrow over Treuer’s death, saying: “Louis Dreyfus Company B.V. (LDC) is deeply saddened to announce that Patrick Treuer, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), passed away unexpectedly overnight. Since joining the Group in 2014, Patrick contributed actively and significantly to the Group’s growth trajectory through his strategic vision and financial expertise, and will be greatly missed. The Group’s Board members, Executive Group, and employees extend their deep and heartfelt condolences to Mr. Treuer’s family and loved ones in this difficult time. Arrangements regarding Mr. Treuer’s successor as Group CFO will be announced in due course.”

Treuer was one of several non-executive directors on Sunderland’s board, alongside Igor Levin, Maurice Louis-Dreyfus, Juan Sartori, Simon Vumbaca, and Leo Pearlman. The Louis Dreyfus family consolidated its majority stake in the club in 2022, acquiring 51% of shares and securing long-term ownership.

During Treuer’s tenure on the board, Sunderland returned to the Premier League after winning the playoff final against Sheffield United, marking a successful chapter in the club’s resurgence.

Sunderland currently sits sixth in the Premier League, just two points off the Champions League spots, and is set to host Leeds United at the Stadium of Light on December 28 for a 2 pm kick-off.
