Negligence by civic authorities has once again claimed an innocent life in Hyderabad, Sindh, where a five-year-old girl died after falling into an open sewer. The tragic incident occurred in the Bypass Town, Hala Naka area, spreading grief and fear among local residents.
According to police and rescue officials, the child, identified as Maryam, was playing near her home when she accidentally fell into an uncovered drain. Residents of the area rushed to pull her out and immediately transported her to Civil Hospital Hyderabad. However, doctors confirmed that she had already passed away by the time she arrived. The incident left the family devastated.
Local residents stated that several open drains in Bypass Town and surrounding neighborhoods have remained uncovered for a long time. They complained that no protective grills or proper fencing have been installed, despite repeated complaints to the concerned authorities. According to locals, no practical measures have been taken so far to address the issue.
It is worth noting that this is the second such incident in Hyderabad this month involving children drowning in open drains or water-filled areas. Earlier, a three-year-old girl lost her life after drowning in a pond in the Latifabad area, raising serious questions about the performance of the city administration.
Social activists and citizens have strongly demanded that all open drains across the city be immediately covered and proper safety measures ensured. They warned that failure to act even after repeated tragedies would amount to gross negligence, putting more innocent lives at risk.
