Muslim Nations Condemn Israeli FM’s Controversial Visit to Somaliland

09 January, 2026 11:23

A coalition of 22 Muslim-majority countries, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Iran, Qatar, Oman, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Indonesia, and Somalia, has strongly criticized Israel’s foreign minister Gideon Saar for visiting Somaliland. The countries, along with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), called the visit a breach of Somalia’s sovereignty and warned it could destabilize the Horn of Africa.

Why the Visit Sparks Controversy

The visit took place in Hargeisa, the self-declared capital of Somaliland, which has sought international recognition since 1991 but is not recognized by the United Nations or African Union. Saar met Somaliland’s president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, and other officials to discuss expanding diplomatic relations, including the potential opening of embassies and future ambassador exchanges.

Critics say the visit undermines Somalia’s territorial integrity. The joint statement from the Muslim nations said: “Any action that undermines Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity is unacceptable.”

The countries also warned that Israel’s reported plans to recognize Somaliland could be “dangerous and destabilizing,” potentially setting a dangerous precedent for state sovereignty in Africa.

Somalia’s Position

Somali authorities have consistently rejected foreign engagement with Somaliland that bypasses Mogadishu. They welcomed the backing from Muslim countries and the OIC, describing it as a reaffirmation of international law and Somali unity.

Regional Implications

Analysts warn that unilateral diplomatic actions in the Horn of Africa—a region critical to maritime routes and regional security—can increase tensions. They urged international players to respect Somalia’s constitution, engage in dialogue, and avoid actions that could further destabilize the region.
