Arshad Sharif Murder Case Enters Final Stage, Court Says

14 January, 2026 12:06

During a hearing of the Arshad Sharif murder case in Islamabad, the Federal Constitutional Court indicated that the proceedings have entered their final stages.

The court stated that an appropriate order will soon be issued regarding the matter. During the proceedings, Chief Justice Aamir Farooq remarked that while the investigation process has been notably slow, the court does not intend to directly level accusations at any party at this stage.

Arshad Sharif’s widow’s lawyer took the stand, noting that the investigation by the commission—formed on the basis of a suo motu notice—remains incomplete.

Justice Aamir Farooq inquired about the progress made in Kenya. The lawyer explained that a case had been filed in Kenya, where the court ruled in their favor; the Kenyan court rejected the claim that the murder was a mere “accident” and ordered a formal investigation.

The lawyer further informed the court that despite the Kenyan court order, there has been no significant progress in the investigation.

He emphasized that the purpose of approaching the Pakistani court is to ensure the government supports the victim’s family, noting a clear disparity between the government’s current position and that of the family.

The Additional Attorney General informed the court that, following an agreement between the two countries, a joint investigation with Kenya is now possible. He stated that investigators will visit the crime scene and examine evidence provided by the Kenyan government.

During the hearing, Justice Aamir Farooq referenced the Imran Farooq murder case, noting that while that incident occurred in England, the investigation was successfully conducted in collaboration with British police. However, the Additional Attorney General argued that the nature of the Imran Farooq and Arshad Sharif cases differs significantly.

The court was informed that a challan (charge sheet) has been submitted in the Arshad Sharif case, naming two accused individuals who are currently under arrest in Kenya.

The Additional Attorney General concluded by stating that the investigation within Pakistan is complete and that the Prime Minister has personally contacted the President of Kenya to expedite the matter, assuring the court that the government is making every effort to resolve the case.
