Sindh govt decides to conduct judicial inquiry into Gul Plaza tragedy

KARACHI: Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon held a press conference and said that precious lives were lost in the Gul Plaza incident. He expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and said the Sindh government is taking strict action against those found responsible.

Sharjeel Memon said a special meeting of the Sindh Cabinet was held after the incident, and the investigation report has now been received. A sub-committee under the leadership of the Sindh Chief Minister has been formed to review the matter.

He said the Chief Minister has included the Commissioner and Additional IG in the investigation committee to ensure transparency. The Sindh government has suspended the Director Civil Defence and the Additional Director South, and orders have been issued to start departmental action against both officers.

The minister added that the Senior Director Municipal Services will also be suspended. He admitted that there was a delay in water supply, which caused difficulties during rescue operations. Due to this, the Chief Engineer of the Bulk Water Board has also been suspended, and action will be taken against the Bulk Water Engineer and Hydrant Incharge.

Sharjeel Memon announced that the Sindh government will conduct a judicial inquiry into the Gul Plaza tragedy. For transparency, a request will be sent to the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court to appoint a judge for the inquiry.

He further said that legal action will also be taken against the building management as per law. The Sindh government has announced compensation of Rs. 10 million (one crore rupees) for each victim’s family.

The government has assured that all responsible individuals will be held accountable and such incidents will be prevented in the future.
