How to Fly a Kite at Basant – Check Complete Guide

05 February, 2026 13:01

The three-day Basant festival is set to begin in Lahore from February 6, after the Punjab government decided to lift the ban on the historic event after 18 years. The festival will be held under strict rules and safety measures.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a “long weekend” in the province. She declared a “provincial Basant holiday on the 6th, followed by Saturday and Sunday ”, allowing people to fully enjoy the celebrations.

With Basant revived in 2026 (February 6–8 in Lahore under strict safety rules), many people are preparing to fly kites. Below is a simple beginner’s guide to help you fly a kite safely and successfully.

Step-by-Step Guide to Flying a Kite

First, choose a day with steady and moderate wind. Avoid stormy weather. Fly your kite in an open and safe area like a park, field, or a safe rooftop, away from trees, power lines, buildings, and airports.

Assemble Your Kite

Most Basant kites are diamond-shaped with a single string. Make sure the kite frame is strong, the strings are tied properly, and the tail (if there is one) is attached for balance.

Position Yourself

Stand with your back facing the wind. This helps the wind lift the kite easily. If possible, ask a friend to hold the kite facing the wind.

Launch the Kite

Hold the spool and slowly release 10 to 20 meters of string. Let your friend release the kite while you gently pull back. Do not pull too hard.

Ascend and Control

Slowly release more string while keeping light tension. If the kite drops, gently pull the string or move forward to balance it. Small tugs help control direction.

Fly and Battle (Basant Style)

During Basant, people compete by trying to cut other kites. Use smart movements and angles. When you win, shout “bo kata!”.

Basant-Specific Tips (Lahore 2026 Edition)

Use Approved Gear Only
Buy kites and strings only from licensed sellers with QR codes. Avoid illegal and dangerous strings, especially chemical or glass-coated ones.

Safety First
Fly kites only on approved and covered rooftops. Wear gloves to protect your hands. Motorcyclists should use safety gear. Stay away from power lines, roads, and restricted areas.

Supervise Kids
Children should never be left alone on rooftops.

Clean Up
Always collect fallen kites and strings to protect birds and animals.
